The species of the title, Cercopithèques includes many kinds of Diana Monkey. But Balkanyi’s attention to detail, and the accuracy of her drawing and rendering of texture combine to allow us to identify the Diana monkeys in this print as belonging to the subspecies Roloway Monkeys, one of the most endangered animals in the whole of Africa. Yet this is much more than a zoological illustration. These monkeys demand our attention: their gaze unsettles us and forces us to respond.
