The Jardin des Plantes still had a giant anteater on show in the mid twentieth century . The guide described it as “very sweet, quite inoffensive but lacking intelligence”.Jacques Prèvert describes children being taken to see the creature as a treat. Note too that Balkanyi has placed a tiny insect just within reach of the anteater’s languid tongue.
