The Ménagerie where Balkanyi worked had acquired its first Malaysian tapir in 1932. Since they are known to live in captivity for 25 years or more, this is probably that first one. These herbivore and pig-like creatures love water for playing in and for bathing: Maybe that is why Balkanyi has given them a trough with a frog. These tapirs seem so placid when contrasted with the ostriches in the background.
